Videocraft is holding a 3-day course instructing operators on how to calibrate any monitor found in a professional film and television environment today.

Eizo Pointon calibration

Videocraft is holding a comprehensive 3-day course featuring two systems for display calibration. The course instructs operators on how to calibrate any monitor found in a professional film and television environment.

The section on the main calibration system teaches students how to calibrate all professional monitors using Colourspace, Eizo’s monitor calibration tool. Colourspace includes 3D LUT calibration, 2-point white point and how to use the LUT tool’s scaling function to successfully use a LUT box in legal level workflow. This instruction will be a deep dive into display calibration, including creating matrix offsets for colourimeters using a very precise spectrophotometer, CR300, provided by EIZO.

As an added bonus, the second system demonstrates how to calibrate EIZO professional imaging monitors using the EIZO calibration system, ColorNavigator 7. This system integrates with EIZO monitors, allowing creatives to perform accurate calibration. The course will take students on a thorough exploration of ColorNavigator 7, based on the needs of post production workflows.

The class size will be limited to 8 for optimal learning, with a minimum of 4 attendees required. The Course includes lunch and light refreshments throughout the day.

Course Outline

Because post-production systems typically involve a range of monitors, such as client and reference monitors, calibration is required to ensure that images will match, regardless of the monitor they are viewed on. Using Colourspace, the students will learn how to correctly calibrate the monitors found in and around post suites, DIT carts and broadcast studios. Significant time will be spent on issues that cause problems when calibrating monitors. Learning to recognize these issues is fundamental to successful display calibration.

Sessions

Session 1 gives a basic understanding of how light works with the human visual system, and how the display and its environment affect the viewing conditions and the perceived image. Measuring colour, measurement instruments and probe matching are included.

In Session 2, students will gain the background knowledge needed to carry out monitor calibration in the film and TV industry.

Session 3 is a Practical Session showing students how to use the software and instruments used in colorimetry, working with ColorNavigator 7, white point calibration and 3D LUT calibration.

Trainer

Course Trainer Stuart Pointon currently owns and operates PAVtCAL, a creative technology business that provides AV system design and consultation, colour workflow advice. Stuart has 40 years of engineering, sales and marketing experience in broadcast television, post-production and cinematography. Since the late 90s, he has researched and delivered seminars such as the effect of LED light sources in cinematography. In 2016 Stuart’s paper titled ‘UHD – Lens to Lounge Room’ with HDR/WCG was used as a major contribution from FreeTV Australia in the formation of ITU HDR standard BT.2100.
