CINEFLARES interactive lens flare library is a resource for DoPs, directors, VFX artists, game designers and others, to help inform decisions about lenses in support of their artistic vision.

CINEFLARES is an interactive lens flare collection developed as a resource for cinematographers, directors, VFX artists, film students, game designers and other visual creatives, to help them make informed decisions about lenses in support of their artistic vision.

Today, cinema lens choices seem limitless – vintage, anamorphic, large format and many others. Markus Förderer ASC BVK compiled CINEFLARES as a comprehensive library that professional filmmakers can use to explore and compare a huge selection of cine lenses. It gives users a chance to view their individual visual characteristics and response to light.

Each lens has been used to professionally capture a bright point light source against a deep black background. Each shoot has taken place under controlled conditions using precise motion control equipment and high-resolution, large format cameras. In the resulting images, each lens exhibits its distinctive flare pattern, ability to hold contrast and individual colour response – revealing the unique ‘fingerprint’, or lens flare, of each one.

Now in its beta phase, among the participants are cinematographers such as Erik Messerschmidt ASC, who remarked on the ease with which it allows users to examine and compare the flare characteristics between lenses with only a mouse click.

According to Seamus McGarvey ASC BSC said the library is a valuable resource for any cinematographer wanting to assess the unique characteristics of multiple lenses in a consistent and controlled environment. “It’s a revelation not only to see the peculiarities of each lens responding to flare but also the distinct characteristics of the glass in terms of colour and focus,” he commented.

Producer and director Michelle MacLaren (The X-Files, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Westworld) said CINEFLARES helps her to discover and compare the vast choices of cinema lenses, explore their distinctive visual character and communicate with cinematographers to choose the right lens to craft the look of projects.

Markus Förderer created CINEFLARES to serve his own cinematic needs on numerous feature films. “If you’re in search of a clean, neutral lens for VFX plates or one with a specific flare pattern reminiscent of a certain period, using CINEFLARES will reveal these lens characteristics, to help you make informed decisions,” he said. “It’s the gateway to discover and learn about the rich history of cine lenses and can serve as a collaborative companion throughout preproduction to post-production.”
