Launched as a means to share professional techniques with artists who cannot attend the hands-on courses offered at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects, the Gnomon Workshop started nine years ago and now offers training DVDs from over 90 instructors. The latest release is by Neville Page, who has developed various approaches to creature and character development while helping create the characters found in ‘Avatar,’ ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘The Watchmen’. In this lecture - initially created for a Master Class series at Gnomon School of Visual Effects - Neville explains and demonstrates an approach to developing character concepts using Photoshop and ZBrush and resulting in a sculpted ZBrush sketch. He shows how his alternative approach to character concept development allows a design to emerge naturally, rather than forcing a preconceived idea. Neville begins in Photoshop, very quickly sketching random shapes and areas of value to ‘find’ an image within. After discovering an intriguing image, he takes it to near completion, revealing the importance of staying open to new ideas as he develops a creature. He further demonstrates how his techniques can be applied while working with ZBrush or in the 3D landscape. Neville Page studied at the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena, California. Although his specialty was product design, he has gravitated towards entertainment. With the combination of his education and personal interests, Neville has found himself involved with quite a variety of projects from creature design and sculpture to conceptual design and engineering. His clients have included Universal Studios, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Mattel and BMW. He has worked on such feature films as ‘Minority Report’, ‘Planet of the Apes’, ‘X-Men’ 2 & 3, ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, ‘Superman Returns’, ‘Avatar,’ J.J. Abrams' ‘Cloverfield’, Louis Leterrier's ‘The Hulk’ and ‘Star Trek’. Neville has also taught at the Art Centre College of Design, in Pasadena and Switzerland, Otis College, Gnomon and corporate workshops.www.thegnomonworkshop.comwww.gnomonschool.com |
