RTL Nieuws Transmits Live US Election Show with Dejero LIVE+ EnGo

Dejero LIVE EnGo RTL US Election1

Dutch broadcaster, RTL Nieuws, is covering US election results from a studio in New York in a special four-hour long live show, using Dejero’s compact mobile LIVE+ EnGo device to transmit video and audio back to the Netherlands.

Freek Herberts, cameraman/editor at Storicam broadcast production company, has been capturing and editing reports for RTL Nieuws over the course of its US election campaign coverage. He has been using Dejero’s LIVE+ EnGo to encode IP video and bond the available networks, including cellular, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and satellite, to deliver HD video back to RTL in the Netherlands, from the Republican and Democrat conventions and rallies all over the US.

Short RTL Nieuws reports from New York have been transmitted live from the roof of its affiliate station in Manhattan throughout the election campaign using LIVE+ EnGo, but tomorrow’s election results night, will be the first time that RTL uses the device to transmit a full live show from a studio. After so much experience with it, Freek said, “We’re surprisingly confident about how the EnGo will perform on the night - though I don’t think we would have considered a 4-hour long live show using any other mobile transmitter.”

LIVE+ EnGo is a compact camera-mounted or wearable transmitter for remote video acquisition. It encodes H.264 video and transmits it over multiple IP networks to deliver high quality video with extremely low latency. Its modular design enables the attachment of swappable wireless modules to customize LIVE+ EnGo to the locally available wireless network infrastructure, and for use around the world.

Its compact design and agility make LIVE+ EnGo especially useful for adaptibility in breaking news situations in the field, but this live show application opens new opportunities and potential for broadcasters looking for a simple, economical system even in more permanent facilities.

“On our way to the airport in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, when some controversial video/audio of one of the presidential candidates was released, we were able to set up a live shot within 10 minutes of the request from RTL, without having to move to one of RTL’s affiliate news stations or reschedule our flights,” said Freek. The amount of time and cost we’ve saved because of the EnGo’s smart connectivity is impressive.”

RTL Nieuws employs Dejero’s LIVE+ Control cloud management system at its headquarters to make managing its EnGo transmitters simpler in the field. studio technicians can use LIVE+ Control to locate, monitor performance and remotely control transmitters from a web browser. They can also preview incoming feeds and route live and recorded content to on-air playout and online distribution workflows.

Freek believes that using bonding transmitters in this way is a matter of confidence and preparedness. “I know that some camera crews using alternative transmitters will still only use AP for live shots as they’re not as confident of their systems. But we take the EnGo nearly everywhere now, so that if anything happens, we’re ready.”
