5G VISTA, devoted to live interactive viewing experiences, has welcomed four further organisations to drive the project from proof of concept to live stadium application. Funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), it demonstrates how such experiences can be delivered direct to devices, using 5G broadcast systems at live entertainment venues.
The existing consortium, made up of Digital Catapult, DTG (Digital TV Group), Global Wireless Solutions, Rohde & Schwarz and Virgin Media O2, now includes ATEME, Imaginary Pictures, Ori and 5GIC.
Alex Buchan, Project Lead and Strategic Technologist at the DTG said, “We’re excited to have these four organisations on board for the next development phase for 5G VISTA. Each consortium member brings distinct but complementary skills from across the whole mobile media delivery ecosystem, and the new members are no different."
ATEME will supply video compression and encoding required to deliver the project’s live content over the 5G broadcast network. Ori Industries develops a unified edge platform to orchestrate ATEME’s system on Virgin Media O2’s 5G network. Workloads on the edge can run with the performance of on-premises deployments, combined with low latency, data locality and network access at high bandwidths.
The University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) will investigate multicast/broadcast security within the 5G VISTA project. The work includes the design and validation of end-to-end security for group communications using Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) for packet-switched networks and a lightweight multicast key management system that reduces the computational overhead of key generation, updates and storing. Imaginary Pictures will supply the cameras, production and master control capability for the project's demonstrations.

Video in Stadia Technical Architecture (VISTA) aims to take full advantage of 5G New Radio, enhanced Mobile Broadband and 5G broadcast services, trialled with LTE FeMBMS, to demonstrate new and exciting in-stadia digital experiences. The FeMBMS development (Further evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) of the LTE telecommunications standard uses a point-to-multipoint interface to improve the efficiency of of broadcast and multicast services delivery by allowing up to 100% of the capacity to be dedicated to broadcast services.
The VISTA collaboration brings together complementary skills, knowledge and experience from across the mobile media delivery ecosystem from devices, to networks to broadcast to content and venues. The following companies have joined together to test and demonstrate the technical feasibility and the business potential of the FeMBMS features in 5G –
ATEME develops a containerised software encoding system that encodes and packages the camera feeds into the correct formats for broadcast distribution by the feMBMS system.
Digital Catapult manages the 5G testbed network, validation of the business cases and assessment of further applications and market verticals.
DTG handles project management, coordination and collaboration with the creative industries.
GWS produces consumer behaviour analysis and market research.
Imaginary Pictures supplies production and live camera expertise for technical demonstrations.
Ori Industries operates an Edge Compute platform that enables workloads to be deployed at the edge of the network, supporting many different use cases such as encoding systems for live sports streaming services deployed on 5G networks.
Rohde & Schwarz brings the equipment, systems and expertise for a multicast/broadcast overlay network based on FeMBMS.
Virgin Media O2 serves as a combined mobile network operator and broadband network, and has strong associations with live sport and music. It is supplying 4G and 5G network configurations for the project.
