Updates to 3D animation tools inMayaand3ds Max 2016, including playback and character rig manipulation, improve realism and control. Simulations are now more efficient.

InMaya 2016, new adaptive foam inBifrostadds froth, foam and bubbles, or whitewater, to liquid simulation for more realism and detail in scenes with oceans, beaches, lakes and stormy seas. This helps create high-resolution simulations close to camera while lowering the computation of foam particles in other areas, resulting in shorter simulation times.

You can drive the behaviour of liquids using a cached simulation or an animated mesh object. With aguided simulation, a full-depth, low-resolution simulation can be used to guide a high-resolution simulation on the liquid's surface. You can also use guided simulation for art-directed hero waves and similar effects, and perform multiple iterations at high resolution while retaining the basic look and motion of the simulation.
    
When creatingatmospheric effectssuch as smoke and mist in Bifrost,Aeroproduces simulations of higher detail and greater physical accuracy than Maya Fluid Effects. As in guided simulation, low resolution aero solves can drive higher resolution detail. This adaptability allows you to define regions of high resolution within a massively large computational domain.

XGenhas a new presets workflow for sharing looks between meshes by applying pre-made grass or hairstyles to the meshes to improve the start point. The XGen library now includes Maya Fur presets and allows you to build a library of descriptions with custom thumbnails.

The newsculpting toolsbring more detail and resolution. The brushes have Volume and Surface falloff, stamp images, sculpting UVs, and support vector displacement stamps. A new guide-sculpting brush has width control on splines for creating custom shapes for primitives, such as leaves, scales and feathers.Multithreadingspeeds up preview generation and interactivity, reducing the time spent waiting for primitives to generate on the surface. The new bounding box speeds previews in the viewport by reducing the number of polygons generated.

Parallel rig evaluationis added to increase the speed of character rig playback and manipulation. The new, multithreaded system distributes computation among existing cores and graphics processors, and a new GPU-based mechanism performs deformations on graphics hardware within Viewport 2.0. APIs are available to create customized GPU-accelerated deformers, and users have an integrated performance profiler to help find bottlenecks in scenes and plug-ins.
   
TheDelta Mushdeformer uses smooth deformation to help guide the final result closer to the original geometry. Delta Mush applies to many different workflows, such as paint-free skinning, smoothing of coarse simulation results, and shot post corrections.

To enhance the look development workflow, building and editing materials in theHypershadeenvironment has simpler workflows and a customisable UI. New layout tabs help organize work with shading graphs. A rebuilt node-editing interface makes it easier to connect, arrange and work with shading components, and complex shading graphs can be visualized and diagnosed.

3ds Max 2016

In 3ds Max 2016 a newCamera Sequencerhelps create high-quality animated visualizations, animatics and cinematics more easily with more camera control. It’s possible to cut between multiple cameras, trim and reorder animated clips nondestructively, leaving the original data unchanged.

A new,node-based tool creationenvironment extends 3ds Max with geometric objects and modifiers by creating graphs in a visual environment. Hundreds of node types or operators can be connected to create new tools and visual effects. It is also possible to create new node types by saving graphs, and to package and share new tools.

New support fornondestructive animationworkflows inXRefnow makes collaboration across teams and through the pipeline easier and more stable. You can externally reference objects to a scene and animate them or edit material on the XRef object in the source file without having to merge the objects into the scene - local scenes automatically inherit changes made in the source file.

Dual Quaternionskinning now creates better skinned characters with more realistic deformations and avoids losing volume in the mesh as deformers are twisted. This new option in the Skin modifier enables you to paint the amount of influence skinning has on a surface when required..

With further support forOpenSubdiv, first added during 2015, subdivision surfaces can now be represented using the Pixar open-source OpenSubdiv libraries. The libraries use both parallel CPU and GPU architectures. The result is faster in-viewport performance for meshes with high subdivision levels.

There are now moreshading optionsand better shader interoperability between 3ds Max, Maya and Maya LT. Shaders are accessed through the searchable node browser. A wider range of procedural materials can be created with new node patterns, including wavelines, voronoi, simplex noise and brick. A new bump utility node is added to create normal maps from 2D grayscale images.

Autodesk A360 cloud renderingsupport, similar to Revit and AutoCAD, is now available to 3ds Max 2016 subscription customers. This prevents tying up the desktop or the need for extra dedicated rendering hardware when rendering complex simulations or high resolution images. Files can be shared with other users and images re-rendered from previously uploaded files.

Autodesk and Chaos Group, developers of V-Ray, have worked together on a newPhysical Camerathat has shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, exposure and other options that simulate real camera settings. The controls have been enhanced and additional in-viewport feedback added to make creating photorealistic images and animations easier.

The newIrayandmental ray rendererupdates are now supported in 3ds Max. These include extended Iray Light Path Expressions, support for the Iray irradiance render element and Light Importance Sampling.
