The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has announced two new members that will contribute significantly to its efforts to define and develop technologies that address the demand for open standards for media compression and delivery spanning video, audio, still images and immersive content.

Trinity College Dublin, one of the world's best known research institutions, has joined the Alliance along with THX, high-fidelity audio and video tuning, certification and technology company and producer of the iconic THX Deep Note Trailers. As members of AOMedia, Trinity College and THX will collaborate with the Alliance's community of internet and media technology member companies to drive open standards for video, audio and multimedia development worldwide.

Founded in 1998 by Professor Anil Kokaram, Trinity’s School of Engineering's Signal Processing for Media Applications (Sigmedia) Group will lead the effort to help AOMedia explore new use cases, technical advances, and adoption strategies that promote a more open media ecosystem. Sigmedia is a prominent audio and video technology research group within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin.

"We are excited to join AOMedia and collaborate with industry leaders on advancing the future of open media technologies," said Trinity Professor Anil Kokaram. "Committed to pioneering research and technological innovation, the Sigmedia Group at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering is proud to contribute our expertise to the development of open media standards and help foster a more inclusive digital media landscape."

As a newly welcomed member of AOMedia, Sigmedia researchers will contribute to advancing the development and adoption of high-performance video codecs, including AV1, which enables high-quality video streaming without friction. The team will also support developments in volumetric media, enhancing immersive and interactive experiences. Additionally, Sigmedia will aid AOMedia's efforts in creating open audio codecs that deliver high-quality sound for modern multimedia applications.

"We are excited to welcome Trinity College Dublin to AOMedia," said AOMedia Chair Matt Frost. "Trinity's exceptional research and dedication to technological innovation will greatly enhance our collaborative work in developing open and accessible media standards. We look forward to the valuable contributions of the Sigmedia Group to our working groups and the broader open media ecosystem."

THX Joins the Alliance

Like Trinity, THX audio and video technology experts will contribute to advancing the development and adoption of high-performance video codecs. THX will also aid AOMedia's efforts in creating open audio codecs that deliver high-quality sound for modern multimedia applications.

"Since our inception, THX has remained dedicated to helping consumers enjoy content the way the creator intended it to be enjoyed. This has made us the leading experts in audio and video fidelity for all entertainment," said Tuyen Pham, chief executive officer, THX Ltd. "Immersive media formats are a key component to experiencing true-to-life entertainment. We are pleased to join other leaders in the field to bring an open-source approach with AOMedia to make this mission a reality. This new format will help to bring to market many new innovative features fostering outstanding new user experiences."

THX efforts will help AOMedia explore new use cases, technical advancements, and adoption strategies that promote a more open media ecosystem. Founded in 1983 by filmmaker George Lucas, THX brings to the group more than four decades of cinematic experience developing high-fidelity certifications, technologies, and standards for the proliferation of excellent entertainment experiences everywhere.

"Welcoming THX to AOMedia reflects our joint commitment to improving open media in new ways," Matt Frost said. "We look forward to collaborating with THX in our shared goal of developing and encouraging the rapid adoption of open web media technologies while ensuring the quality of those new media experiences across various devices and platforms."

THX has joined several AOMedia working groups, including the group focused on IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Formats), a new open-source immersive audio technology. THX supports AOMedia's belief that an open-source approach will help expand the use of next-generation immersive multimedia formats by creators across all entertainment categories.  aomedia.org
