BURANO Version 2.0 will include further recording modes, added support for SDI output, proxy recording and functionality for live event and multicam productions.

Sony BURANO SEL2470GM2 Mobility

The Sony BURANO camera has a Version 2.0 firmware update coming up in March 2025. Among the features and improvements announced so far are new recording formats, a 1.8x de-squeeze and upgraded monitoring.

Some of these upcoming features were announced in mid 2024 at the same time as Version 1.1, but many are new.

The new Version 2.0 formats include a 3.8K Full Frame crop that makes use of almost the entire sensor and can record up to 120 fps. A 1.9K mode will allow shooting at up to 240 fps. Using these new recording modes, filmmakers can manipulate sensor performance to suit their application. Other new recording formats include 24 fps in the X-OCN 16:9 imager modes, as follows -

Full Frame    3.8K 16:9 Mode                        Up to 120 fps       XAVC and X-OCN
Super 35       4.3K 4:3 Mode (Anamorphic)   Up to 60 fps         X-OCN only
Super 35       1.9K 16:9 Mode                        Up to 240 fps       XAVC only
[Note that SDI output and HDMI outputs aren’t available for shooting 240 fps.]

BURANO Version 2.0 will add a 1.8x de-squeeze setting for anamorphic shots, as well as further high frame rate (S & Q) modes, now going up to 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96 and 110 fps. In the S & Q modes, users can select, in-camera, to shoot from 1 fps (for time-lapse) up to 110 fps (for slow motion). Version 2.0 will also add proxy recording for 24 fps recording formats.

Monitoring, SDI, Metadata Updates

Monitoring and metadata improvements include a new feature, Monitor FHD, for standardised SDI video output to use when monitoring across X-OCN and XAVC. Users will have breathing compensation and image stabilization metadata in X-OCN, time code and clip name metadata added to SDI output.

Sony notes that, based on comments from BURANO users, Version 2.0 will enhance on-screen display, placing camera status information outside of the image, and also includes View Finder Gamma Display Assist while using S-Log3 for monitoring.

24V output will be added to the PL Mount Voltage menu, and users will be able to access Focus/Iris/Zoom control for PL Mount lenses while using the BURANO's optional GP-VR100 handgrip.

Image Output and Exposure Tools

BURANO Version 2.0 includes several updates to image output, for example, when using the preset S-Log3 look or 3D User LUTs. Version 2.0 will also enhance Auto Focus performance when recording with the 23.98, 24, 25 and 29.97 frame rates.

Version 2.0 incorporates further exposure tools (High/Low Key) derived from the VENICE camera system. In Full-Frame crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 imager modes, it will also expand white balance memory presets from 3 to 8 and support Active/High Image Stabilization.

Standard, specialised functionality for documentary and reality TV applications will be available as well, with the ability to format media from the status screen, and to set CAM ID and Reel Number.

Version 2.0 will also change the factory default frequency setting in the BURANO from 59.94 to 23.98p and will add a setting to ‘reset to factory defaults’ to the menu.

Finally, for live event and multicam productions, BURANO Version 2.0 will add functionality including variable ND control from RCPs (remote control panels), improved camera control from Camera Remote SDK, and tally control for devices connected via LAN.

The new BURANO Version 2.0 is planned for release in March 2025. Users will be able to download the update directly to cameras using a Mac or PC. pro.sony
