Through its deployment of Zixi’s protocol and platform, SPOTV gains control over its content distribution as it transitions from traditional satellite and fibre to cloud-based IP infrastructure.
South Korea’s SPOTV, a linear and digital sports content provider, has expanded into Southeast Asia, bringing a diverse lineup of global and local events to the region’s sports viewers. Through recent adoption and deployment of the Zixi protocol and software platform, SPOTV gains control over its content distribution as it transitions from traditional satellite and fibre to a modern, cloud-based IP infrastructure.
Using Zixi-as-a-Service (ZaaS), SPOTV adopts a flexible, cost-effective robust IP delivery workflow, overcoming typical issues in fibre networks such as packet loss and signal drops. A main component is the Zixi Broadcaster, bridging SPOTV’s on-premises sources to the cloud where Zixi’s Software-Defined Video Platform (SDVP) processes and distributes content to affiliates. Meanwhile, ZEN Master acts as the control plane to orchestrate operations and gives SPOTV visibility throughout the process.
IP-based Distribution
By transitioning to IP-based distribution with Zixi, SPOTV can rapidly onboard new affiliates, maintain operational agility and control costs. By avoiding more costly fibre networks and satellite infrastructure in favour of simpler IP and cloud-based networks, SPOTV can reach different markets and explore revenue streams without significant upfront investments.
Working with Zixi’s broadcast infrastructure as a service means SPOTV can ingest and distribute live video over regular IP networks with ultra-low latency. It includes all capabilities of the SDVP, with tools to monitor and manage signals across the network, over a fully redundant video-over-IP pipeline, protecting against potential failure scenarios.
Zixi’s protocol optimisation, achieving higher throughput and lossless compression, along with ZEN Master cloud control interface are other ways that Zixi supports cost-efficiency and ease of management. With the platform’s lower egress costs and computing power requirements, SPOTV will be able to reduce total cost of ownership.
Network Performance
"One significant discovery was the positive impact of the Zixi protocol on our network performance, and how adopting Zixi has helped resolve issues our affiliates encountered with traditional delivery methods," said Prakash Maniam, Head of Broadcast Operations and Engineering at SPOTV. "With Zixi’s FEC (forward error correction) capabilities, the system recovers lost packets effectively, resulting in error-free delivery across the network."
"On the Zixi platform, SPOTV has tools and services to manage and control our signal delivery, and make sure distribution is reliable," said Lee Chong Khay (CK), CEO of SPOTV. "This partnership with Zixi has resulted in higher-quality service at SPOTV and meet the growing demands of our audience across Southeast Asia. We look forward to furthering this collaboration as we expand into new types of innovation with Zixi." www.zixi.com
