Data management and storage specialist Spectra Logic has developed a new capability for its Rio Media Suite archiving platform that makes archived media easier to find, preview and restore. The new feature, called Media Insight, applies AI-assisted data enrichment to its process for discovering media, analysing archived video to identify scenes and other elements within the content. This added intelligence makes large media collections easier to explore and personalise.
Traditionally, archive workflows often require users to identify an asset, restore it from archive storage and wait for the full-resolution content to become available before they can determine whether it is the right asset. Media Insight simplifies this workflow by first generating thumbnails and proxies from high-resolution video, serving as a faster way to search and preview content before initiating a restore. The result is more efficient discovery and retrieval of content within the media archive.
Visual Discovery
"Media archives contain enormous amounts of valuable content, but that value is limited when people cannot easily find and access what they need," said Hossein ZiaShakeri, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Media and Telecom, Spectra Logic. "Media Insight brings intelligence and visual discovery to the archive, making it easier for organisations to find, understand, preview, and restore the right content using visual and metadata context, then retrieve only what they need, supporting ongoing production and efficient content reuse."
By making this feature a part of the Rio Media Suite, users extend the software’s exisitng archive workflows. In particular, Rio uses metadata and simple discovery tools to find and access the right content from the archive, and is able to restore specific media segments quickly, reducing wait times, bandwidth consumption, and storage overhead. Called Partial File Restore, Rio can retrieve smaller segments of large media files very precisely.
Media Insight outputs thumbnails, proxies, metadata-driven search, AI-assisted enrichment and access to associated production assets, helping media teams find, preview, understand and evaluate content before retrieving the high-resolution files. Users can then select the portion of a file they need and use Partial File Restore to retrieve only that content.
Minimising Manual Tasks
More generally, organisations use Rio Media Suite for its policy-driven automation, reducing the number of manual tasks teams have to undertake when managing data lifecycles and moving files. It can be set up to scale by integrating smoothly across a broad range of on-premises, hybrid and cloud storage systems. Over time, a team can use it to help them adapt to evolving media workflows and growing storage demands—without disrupting existing infrastructure.
