Blackmagic Design’s new PYXIS 12K camera has a 12K RGBW sensor, 16 stops of dynamic range, dual CFexpress media recorders, 10G Ethernet and Blackmagic Cloud global sync.
Blackmagic Design’s new PYXIS 12K is built with the same sensor as the URSA Cine 12K LF and includes 16 stops of dynamic range, dual CFexpress media recorders, 10G Ethernet and Blackmagic Cloud global sync. It is housed in a modular body and available in three variants supporting either L-Mount, PL or Locking EF lens mounts.
The full-frame sensor has a native resolution of 6048 x 4032 and supports up to 12288 x 8040 in 3:2 open gate format. This sensor is almost three times larger than Super 35, supporting shallow depth of field and full-frame anamorphic shooting. The camera can record at up to 112 fps in 4K. The open gate format allows reframing in post-production, while the 6:5 anamorphic mode enables uncropped widescreen capture. Users can also switch to a Super 35 windowed mode for matched close-ups.
The camera is compatible with a range of different cinema and photographic lenses. The L-Mount supports lenses from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma and allows use of adapters for other formats. The EF variant accommodates DSLR and Pocket Cinema Camera lenses, while the PL model takes professional cinema lenses from Zeiss, ARRI, Cooke and others.
Recording
This new 12K PYXIS model supports resolutions and frame rates from HD up to 12K. Users can shoot at 40 fps in 12288 x 8040 3:2, 60 fps in 12288 x 5112 2.4:1, and 112 fps in 4096 x 2160 4K.
Recording formats include Blackmagic RAW for high image quality and preserving abundant nformation, while recording HD H.264 proxies simultaneously. This capture set-up supports comprehensive workflows that require colour grading, compositing and editing in resolutions up to 12K. Proxies can be uploaded to Blackmagic Cloud during recording, allowing editors remote access to media in real time.
PYXIS 12K On Set
A built-in 4-inch HDR LCD touchscreen serves as both status display and monitoring screen. It has full HD resolution for on-set focusing and framing. The 5-inch PYXIS Monitor, which is optional, is also an HDR touchscreen with camera control and can be mounted to different types of rigs. It includes a 1500-nit display and removable sunshade for outdoor visibility.
The camera is compatible with the URSA Cine EVF, which features a 1920 x 1080 OLED display, proximity sensor and glass diopter for adjustable focus.
The PYXIS 12K has two CFexpress card recorders and a USB-C port for external media recording. CFexpress cards are durable and fast, supporting the high-resolution Blackmagic RAW files. Dual slots can be used to set up hot-swapping during recording.
The body of the PYXIS 12K is constructed from CNC-machined aerospace aluminium, increasing strength and keeping the weight low. As PYXIS models are known for their rigging options, it is built with multiple mounting points and side plates for additional gear such as microphones or handles. The standard plate features 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch mounts, and an SSD plate is included for attaching USB-C drives or mobile phones for streaming. The side plates also make it suitable for cranes, gimbals and drones..
Connectivity
Internet connectivity options include USB-C mobile data and wired Ethernet. When connected, media can be uploaded directly to Blackmagic Cloud, enabling remote collaboration during production.
Among the professional connections are12G-SDI output for HDR and Ultra HD monitoring that support longer cable runs on set. Further, built-in streaming capabilities support RTMP and SRT protocols for direct streaming to YouTube, Facebook and other platforms. Users can monitor stream status and data rates from the viewfinder and LCD.
The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K will be available globally from July 2025. www.blackmagicdesign.com
