Chunghwa Telecom, a major Taiwanese telecommunications operator, serves over 3 million video streaming subscribers and delivers a broad selection of live and on-demand content, including premium international sports. With continued rights investments in premier live sports content, Chunghwa Telecom has been interested in upgrading its ad insertion capabilities to better monetize its growing OTT streaming service, Hami Video, and increase ad revenues across live sports and on-demand entertainment.

The operator has partnered with Broadpeak on a new monetization strategy for Hami Video, and is using Broadpeak’s server-side-ad-insertion (SSAI), accessed through the broadpeak.io SaaS platform. This is the first time Chunghwa Telecom has used dynamic ad insertion, aiming to not only enhance monetisation but to improve ad delivery in terms of the viewing experience.

With Broadpeak’s flexible SaaS approach helping to shorten time-to-market, the service went live within weeks. Broadpeak specialises in content delivery network (CDN) and video streaming solutions for content providers and pay-TV operators. Its SSAI solution smoothly integrates ads into video content by stitching them directly into the video stream on the server side, at the same time replacing ads on-the-fly using intelligent personalisation techniques to increase advertising value.

Broadpeak SSAI

According to Broadpeak, this approach improves ad delivery by avoiding ad blockers, and acheiving smooth playback transitions, resulting in dynamic, targeted advertising in real-time. Because it runs on a SaaS model based on the broadpeak.io cloud platform, it gives Chungwha Telecom a cost-effective, flexible service.

As well as fast time-to-market, the Broadpeak’s SSAI also supplied a straightforward third-party integration via API-driven architecture, direct interoperability within existing CDN and ad-tech environments. For efficiency and help handling source stream challenges, Broadpeak also implemented AI-driven tools to automatically detect ad breaks and insert the relevant SCTE-35 markers with frame accuracy within video streams.

Also native to the platform are programmatic (Real Time Bidding) and pre-fetch mode through APIs, which can be combined. Ads are delivered through a distributed edge origin layer with CDN delivery as an option, as in this case. Ingested ad creative is automatically checked for quality, and new ad content is transcoded dynamically. Video ABR transcoding supports H264 and HEVC codecs, up to UHD resolution at 60p, and audio transcoding supports normalization with loudness control.
