BHRT, undergoing a full digitisation project, adopted Cinegy’s software suite to meet the daily news and programming production requirements of its public broadcast TV operations.

Public Radio and Television Service of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHRT) has completed a key step in its organisation-wide digitisation project, begun in 2016. This stage of the project enables BHRT to meet the daily production requirements of its public television broadcasting operations, including two news departments, and involved a transition to entirely tapeless production.

BHRT chose to work with Cinegy’s digital video capture, processing, asset management and playout software to set up the new operations.

BHRT’s new system centres on Cinegy Archive, acting as a secure hub that allows teams to control and share media asset metadata throughout the facility, centralising content management. Because no data is stored on client systems, Cinegy’s software is completely database driven. Instead, media is stored in a centralised repository within Cinegy Archive and accessed directly through the Cinegy Desktop client.

Team Work

Cinegy Desktop enables up to 60 concurrent journalists to work collaboratively on projects at any time, regardless of their locations. Users access the Cinegy Archive database through a computer or laptop over a regular Internet connection, and use the Cinegy Desktop browser-based interface to search, browse, select and edit clips.

As team members work on a project, the changes are immediately reflected in the Cinegy Desktop application, making real-time collaboration possible. The installation also includes Cinegy's transcoding software and Cinegy Prompter, which is compatible with many teleprompter devices.

Muhamed Žerić, CTO at BHRT, said, "Cinegy has resulted in simpler workflows and reduced the time we require for program preparation and editing. Following this deployment, we have been able to significantly improve and accelerate our program production processes.

“Cinegy also integrated certain workflows in ways that mean fewer production staff are needed in-house. Meanwhile, as Cinegy further develops its products, BHRT also stands to benefit from any upgrades to its production work processes."

Ingest and Automation

Cinegy Capture PRO, a multi-channel, multi-format real-time ingest engine, records and makes real-time content streams accessible for BHRT’s team. An acquisition and transcode processor, it brings together the tasks of ingesting material and generating edit or web proxies in the required formats and containers.

Capture PRO can be installed as a set of services on a server or standard PC, anywhere on the network, and configured to work with the user’s video hardware or with IP streams. The system then controls dedicated ingest software functions that simultaneously generate all versions needed for archive, editing and remote working. It also generates IP stream multicast, allowing broadcast-quality real-time feedback streams for instantaneous review of the material received.

To automate certain processes and simplify the job of running multiple channels, Cinegy Air is in use, supporting around 10 multi-channel playout servers. The Cinegy Air integrated software works as a real-time video server for SD, HD, Ultra HD (4K), and/or 8K playout, together with a broadcast automation front-end. It also gives users the flexibility to play out compatible format and mixed resolution content, as well as un-rendered edit sequences straight to air.

BHRT received Cinegy Air on a single hardware unit with features that are configurable whether the application is deployed on local hardware, virtual machines or in the cloud.

"For the future, BHRT has plans for regular system upgrades in connection with our internal needs and expansion plans. These include capture and playout for new studios, transcoding for multimedia and web purposes, and loudness normalization," said Muhamed Žerić. "These expansions are ongoing, arising as they are needed and taking advantage of our experience using the Cinegy system." www.cinegy.com
