Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), the national public-service media company in Ireland, was established in 1926 and its television services in 1961, making RTÉ one of the longest operating public service media organisations in the world. Its services deliver engaging, challenging content with the goal of cultivating Irish culture, and celebrating the country’s talent and diversity.

RTÉ recently needed to set up a new content management system as part of an overall modernisation program underway across the company. RTÉ's CTO and Director of Operations Richard Waghorn said, “Reflecting Ireland's rich history, RTÉ’s archives contain a vast amount of unique Irish content.

“Therefore, a key element in the transformation of RTÉ into a modern media organisation is the development of solutions that enable us to deliver our programming and content, including this wealth of archive material, to our audiences more easily and effectively.”

Rough edits

To help achieve this goal, the company has formed a partnership with Dalet to develop and implement an up to date content management ecosystem. The new platform, named ‘One Media Share’, will integrate approximately 1.3 million hours of content from 19 siloed content storage and archive systems, including in-production content, nearline stored digital content, and deep archive content stored on tape.

Standardising Metadata

Dalet's platform will standardise metadata, which is essential to controlling and using data, with the aim of making all content accessible and searchable through a central library. "Dalet has extensive experience bringing together massive disparate storage pools and archives for broadcasters around the world," said Enrique Lafuente, VP of Sales EMEA, Dalet. "As it enhances its content management and user experience with Dalet’s tools, RTÉ can enable new opportunities."

Asset managegment

The RTÉ team will be able to import metadata from external systems, and use it to populate the new management system. When assets are ingested directly into Dalet, all logged metadata comes with it. Form-based metadata pre-entry can be set up, as well as bulk entry, with sidecar file support. During a bulk upload, metadata can be applied to individual assets.

RTÉ will be able to use this comprehensive integration to upgrade their production and delivery workflows, expanding the ROI for their existing investments. For instance, they can build collections to curate and prepare content for delivery. The Dalet platform will also be used to search for and update metadata and, from there, perform rough edits, exchange sequences with different editing software and trigger other workflows.
