Telefónica adopted Ateme and Google Cloud’s cloud-native architecture to efficiently deliver its VOD catalogue, including 4K content, to devices from mobile screens to connected TVs.

Ateme has partnered with Telefónica telecommunications and mobile network provider of telephone services, broadband and subscription television in Europe and the Americas, to deploy a cloud-native media processing platform for Video-On-Demand (VOD) services. Built on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), the solution enables scalable, high-quality content delivery across Telefónica's international operations.
By adopting a cloud-native architecture, Telefónica can now efficiently deliver its VOD catalogue, which is extensive and includes 4K content, to a wide range of devices, from mobile screens to connected TVs, with more agility.
Ateme's platform integrated with Google Cloud's infrastructure and AI services is central to this transformation and has created certain advantages for Telefonica. For example, the system’s cloud-native scalability allows the company to dynamically scale resources in line with demand using the global reach and elasticity of the cloud. By scaling up resource usage during high-traffic periods, they can keep performance consistent, and by scaling back down again during quieter times, they can lower costs.

The platform ensures consistent 4K video delivery across mobile, desktop and connected TV devices, regardless of bandwidth conditions – improving Telefonica subscribers’ overall quality of experience. A centralised architecture is also an advantage for Telefónica's regional affiliates. Rollouts and updates are more timely, and services are more consistent across markets.
"For us, this project is about more than systems and equipment – it's about improving how we serve our audience," said Javier Lucendo de Gregorio, Head of Video Processing & Delivery at Telefónica. "The new platform gives us the agility to launch services faster, ensure consistent quality across regions, and adapt more quickly to changing viewer behaviours."
The deployment incorporates capabilities for smart workflows as well, such as audience-aware encoding, automated metadata tagging and predictive demand analytics, supporting personalised services and efficient operation.
"The Telefonica deployment is an example of how we work with operators to address evolving video delivery needs," said Christophe Stigas, Vice President Southern Europe & MEA at Ateme. "By integrating our media processing platform on Google Cloud as part of Telefónica's VOD architecture, we've enabled dynamic resource scaling, 4K video delivery and automated workflows, while simplifying operations across multiple markets." www.ateme.com
