Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve 20.2 and Blackmagic Camera 9.8 public beta, introduced just before the IBC 2025 show in Amsterdam, 12-15 September, have added support for both Apple ProRes RAW, including footage captured with the new iPhone 17 Pro, and ProRes RAW HQ file formats. Future updates for Blackmagic Camera, which is the free camera companion app for remotely controlling and monitoring Blackmagic cameras, will continue to add support for these file formats as well.

DaVinci Resolve 20.2 and Blackmagic Camera 9.8 public beta are available now free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website. The Blackmagic Video Assist 12G will also take advantage of the new support.

Earlier on, DaVinci Resolve 20.1 included support for Apple Immersive Video workflows in DaVinci Resolve Studio for macOS. That update meant that filmmakers were able to edit, colour grade, add visual effects, mix Spatial Audio and deliver Apple Immersive Video captured using the new Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera. It became possible to pan, tilt and roll clips, either for viewing on 2D monitors or directly streaming to Apple Vision Pro for immersive editing.

Blackmagic Camera ProDock for iPhone

At IBC, Blackmagic showed a new dock called Camera ProDock that adds professional camera connections to iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to make it easier to use as a production camera. Users can build a compact handheld rig or a complex production setup, using Blackmagic Camera ProDock to add the connections required to work with industry standard gear.

Combined with Blackmagic Camera software, Camera ProDock adds support for external timecode, genlock, audio, SSD recording and other features that allow the iPhone to integrate into studio and on-set environments and custom rigs.

Camera ProDock adds connections for HDMI monitoring, microphones, headphones, USB C for external disks and power. Users can connect iPhones to standard equipment such as timecode generators and lens control accessories.

With professional BNC connections, Camera ProDock brings external genlock and timecode to iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, making it possible to keep all devices in sync. Genlock makes sure that every frame of video is captured in sync with video from other sources, such as cameras and switchers, preventing dropped frames and similar issues. Genlocked synchronisation also makes it possible to record against video displayed on LED walls without flickering or tearing, which is important for virtual production.

When a crew is shooting with multiple cameras, timecode allows each camera to start and stop recording independently. DaVinci Resolve then uses the recorded timecode to automatically sync the shots from all cameras, making manual alignment unnecessary.

Blackmagic Camera ProDock is available now from Apple Store online and Blackmagic Design resellers. www.blackmagicdesign.com
