By integrating LiveU's LU-Smart mobile app with the LiveU Studio cloud production service, RNE has an accessible workflow for production of visual radio content that resonates with audiences
Spain’s national radio, Radio Nacional de España (RNE) has taken measures to incorporate more video content into its radio programming. The move comes in response to a growing demand from RNE's audience, who are seeking more dynamic, varied multimedia experiences, and more immediate, accessible content.
Interested in taking advantage of cloud production capabilities for its live radio programming, RNE has been working with LiveU's IP-video applications and devices, guided by local integration partners, Datos Media Technologies.
LiveU's LU-Smart mobile app runs on existing networks (4G/5G, WiFi and LAN) to support reliable, stable, high-quality coverage, making it possible to produce live content from virtually any location via a smartphone. LU-Smart bonds the smartphone’s internal WiFi and 4G/5G cellular connections to optimise video quality and resiliency. External MiFi can also be used to combine the bonding of two cellular connections in a single smartphone.
LU-Smart connects to LiveU physical or cloud decoding servers. Users monitor and manage the app via LiveU’s Central management software. Its GUI has camera features including auto focus/manual focus, exposure control and grid, and support for Bluetooth audio devices. Its built-in metadata support allows you to send an XML Metadata file to the LiveU server for processing by a MAM system.
Cloud Production Service
By integrating the LU-Smart app with the LiveU Studio cloud production service, RNE has found a straightforward solution that it uses to produce media that better connects with its audience. For example, live interviews can be conducted with guests from external locations, although they may not have technical knowledge or equipment. Instead, the LiveU user sends a link to their smartphone and uses LU-Smart to push them live on-air.
Single operators can produce multi-cam events from the software’s professional broadcast interface.
Signals are sent to LiveU Studio, which facilitates live content production in the cloud. Within LiveU Studio, users can manage channels and mix up to 12 sources, edit graphics, switch sources and distribute video signals from anywhere, without needing complex physical infrastructure.
Single operators can synchronise and produce multi-camera events from a single browser screen, using the software’s broadcast interface. LiveU Studio aims for a combined studio workflow, first capturing live feeds, clean or with graphics, via LRT (LiveU), VOD, Webcam, WebRTC, RTMPs or SRT protocols. From there, users generate various live video content with vision mixing using a Frame Accurate Vision Mixing Engine, remote guest contribution, graphics and audio from a web browser.
Multiple Channels Simultaneously
Finally, the live content is broadcast anywhere, across multiple channels simultaneously, with cloud distribution. In this way, LU-Smart and LiveU Studio grows RNE's capacity to cover live events with minimal equipment and reduced costs. Working with LiveU Studio also means the production teams can integrate further LiveU portable field units to contribute the distributed live feeds for broadcast across any RTVE platform.
According to Jose Luis García Hernán-Pérez, Deputy Director of Technical Media at RNE, "LiveU technology has meant a significant improvement, as it facilitates the incorporation of more video content into radio programming.”
Tomas Nielsen, CEO of Datos Media Technologies, also said, "Our partnership with LiveU brings quality and innovative solutions to our catalogue for this and future joint projects. With LiveU technology, RNE gains the ability to produce live cloud-based events with minimal equipment while maintaining top-tier quality and direct integration with the rest of RTVE." www.liveu.tv
