RE:Vision Effects’ Twixtor time frame manipulation plug-ins have been released as standalone software. Now available for Mac and Windows computers, Twixtor is a simple method of converting frame rates and adding slow or fast motion effects to videos.
For many years, the Twixtor set of plug-ins has been used to create custom speed changes, slow-motion effects and frame-rate conversions. They are especially useful for stretching or shrinking footage to fit a target duration, or creating special effects requiring extreme speed control.
Users drag and drop a video file into the interface, select the in- and out-points, set the speed and output frame rate – and render. Twixtor makes full use of GPUs when available and has no resolution or video duration limit. It also allows users to select the rendered video bitrate as needed.
Twixtor standalone software uses the same video frame interpolation approach as the existing Twixtor plug-ins, automatically calculating the number of frames needed to achieve the selected frame rate. In order to protect image quality, RE:Vision Effects has developed proprietary tracking that calculates motion for each pixel.
The software is then able to synthesize unique, new frames by warping and interpolating frames of the original sequence. The new standalone version includes RE:Vision Effects’ precise machine-learning algorithm that helps to produce smoother, more realistic in-between frames.
Twixtor is sufficiently accurate and able to control artefacts when objects are crossing a scene to help avoid tearing and stretching of moving objects. Users can adjust the output bitrate to produce high-quality intermediates, and create arbitrary speed ramps using the software’s key-frame editor. It is possible to timewarp the audio as well, to preserve the sound track.
