Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) has been awarded the 2025 NAB Show Project of the Year Award in the Production category. This recognition was new at this year’s show to bring attention to significant achievements in media innovation.

MSE, a sports and entertainment organisation known for the NHL's Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Mystics (WNBA) and Monumental Sports Network (MNMT), initiated a project, led by Diversified, in 2024 to emphasise fan engagement as a critical part of sports production.

From Spectators to Community

Monumental produces live and on-demand content with a special interest in regional sports broadcasting, aiming to push the role of fans from spectators to members of a community, whether they are watching from a stadium, from home or on a mobile device.

With Diversified, a project workflow was designed for a new purpose-built broadcast facility that would bring significant changes to the fan and viewer experience. Occupying two floors and opened in March 2024, its broadcast systems follow SMPTE ST 2110 standards for uncompressed video delivery over IP across redundant, diverse power and infrastructure systems.

Five control rooms capable of producing 4K HDR content with graphics, enable the network to cover multiple events simultaneously. Monumental’s main goals for the IP-based media centre include higher quality video, better programming and the opportunity to pursue new content centred on fans’ favourite teams.

Media Asset Management and Virtualisation

Central to this initiative was the integration of Dalet’s media asset management platform and newsroom tools within MNMT’s facility. Charlie Myers, CTO at Monumental Sports & Entertainment, commented on the impact of their collaboration with Dalet has been for the organisation. “It enhances how we engage with our fans, both in-person and through our media platform through our new user-centric, modular platform tailored to the needs of diverse media-driven industries,” he said.

The project encompasses a fully virtualised hybrid cloud infrastructure, storytelling workflows powered by Dalet Flex, and a continuous multi-platform content distribution system reaching across both in-arena and at-home audiences. These innovations have led to more efficient operations and helped to upgrade fan experiences, including dozens of alternate broadcasts for the Capitals and Wizards, advanced analytics as part of the MNMT Game Center gamification experience, and wide ranging original programming.

The facility's two studios are, as mentioned, capable of covering multiple games simultaneously. Also important, the system’s ST 2110 infrastructure supports the flexibility and scalability the network will need to adapt to future broadcast developments. Monumental plans to continue enhancing the viewing experience with more 4K content as well.

Monumental’s new SMPTE ST 2110 facility stands out in its functionality as a regional sports network (RSN). In the US and Canada, regional sports networks have a specific meaning as television channels that present sports programming to a local media market or region and focus on just a few teams that play at Major League level.

The award-winning transformation demonstrates the three companies’ shared goals of collaboration and audience-first solutions. By combining expertise and technology, the Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Diversified, Dalet partnership is an example of future innovation in sports and media production. www.dalet.com
